 Catarina is a small town about 10 miles southeast of Masaya, Nicaragua. Located near Volcán Masaya National Park, Catarina offers a spectacular lookout point of the crater lake, Laguna de Apoyo (Lake Apoyo), atop a cliff along the lake’s edge. The lake is a favorite swim spot for many tourists and there are a number of fine lake-side restaurants in Catarina. The town itself is known for its plant stores, souvenir stands, local paintings, and its elegant cathedral. Catarina is probably the best destination in Nicaragua to enjoy the beauty of Lake Apoyo. |
