Tips for enjoying the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum

Tom says 15 years ago
Particularly for first time visitors it’s a good idea to visit the museum website to learn about the current exhibition. Also, it will alert you to the usual two-week period between exhibitions when some of the galleries are closed. The museum features three exhibitions per year all featuring O’Keeffe and her fellow American Modernists contemporaries. If you are or become a true fan of O’Keeffe one visit will not be enough.

While the museum is small, a total of nine galleries, suggest planning on spending at least an hour for touring the galleries. Additionally, a 12-minute video about O’Keeffe’s life narrated by Gene Hackman and a shorter video produced for the current exhibition run back-to-back continuously throughout the day beginning at 10 a.m. when the museum opens. Save time to visit the museum’s gift shop.

Full admission is equal to that of a movie (matinees in most parts of the US) with discounts for seniors, students and residents of New Mexico. Youth 18 and under get in free. Friday evening from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the museum is free to all. The museum provides a children’s book about Georgia O’Keeffe to help youngsters learn and enjoy their experience.

A great way to experience the museum is to join a docent led tour. They are held daily at 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. There is also a docent-led tour on Friday evenings beginning at 5:45 p.m.

There is indoor public parking a couple blocks in either direction from the museum. On-street parking is limited to two-hours before you have to feed the meter. Note: on-street parking is free on Sunday.

This is the only museum on the planet dedicated to a single artist of international stature who is a woman. It’s a treasure with a collection of more than 3,000 of works in the collection and 1,149 paintings, drawings, and sculptures by O'Keeffe, the Museum's holdings represent the largest repository of her work available to the public in a single institution. Subjects range from the artist's iconic flowers and bleached desert skulls to nudes, landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes, and abstractions, dating from 1901 to 1984.

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center is the only center in the U.S. dedicated to the study of American Modernism.

It's no wonder this is the most visited museum in New Mexico.
