Hum_8
 Hum is the smallest city in the world with a population of 23 inhabitants at an altitude of 349 meters above sea-level situated in the region of Buje 7 km from Roc and 16 kilometers from Buzet. It was once a Slavic settlement and a military base in the Venetian times.
Hum was fortified by ramparts in the 8th century and the walls of city buildings still bear Glagolitic inscriptions. The cemetery church of St. Jeronim from the 11th century has frescoes dating from the 13th century painted by anonymous local masters.
The church tower has an observation point and the clock from the year 1487, which still keeps good time. An old pottery furnace has been repaired and is now used, thereby reviving an almost extinct trade. Above all, Hum is the most valuable museum of Istrian medieval antiquities. From Hum to Roc stretches the "Spomen GlagoljasaJ memorial lane with sculptures by Zelimir Janes. It was erected here in 1976 to work the 500th anniversary of the first mention of a Croatian printed book. It is a tribute to Croatian Glagolitic authors and their ancient tutors, masters St. Ciril and Method master Klement and their followers. |
