OFF the beaches ...

I just spent 5 weeks in Jamaica and once you're away from the beaches and the tourist hustle and flash, you'll probably never want to go back. Now I know, that's a bold statement (especially considering Negril's amazing beach), but I found it to be true.
I spent time in Accompong (in Cockpit Country). I hiked beyond the trails into land that has yet to be traversed - I heard amazing stories about how the Maroon people fought off the British for years and met a lot of people making a real difference in the world.
away from the tourist spots is where I met the most memorable people - I shared goat with Jamaicans, celebrated shop openings with people in the mountains, celebrated Christmas with them and even had the opportunity to twist tobacco.
This island is incredible, and what's even more incredible is that it is an undiscovered gem. All you have to do here is slow down and enjoy the people. In the end, you will return home with a whole new view of the world.
