Kornati Travel Guide

Croatie

Kornati consists of a group of islands. It is a national park, spreading over 320 square km and including 125 large and small islands and reefs, which together form the most beautiful group of islands in the Adriatic Sea.

The National Park of Kornati was established in 1980. The entire archipelago was named after one of the islands called Kornat. The islands are sparsely populated and serve as pasture for sheep.

Almost all cultivable land is in the possession of Murter inhabitants. The surrounding sea is clear and rich in fish. The area to the north-east of the Kornati is famous for its sponge-gathering tradition. The Island of Ravni Zakanj is where a French Mediterranean club is located. The origins of the name Kornati can be traced back into Latin, where "corrinare" means-to crush (crushed and scattered islands). The most southern parts of Dugi Otok Island are morphologically identical with the Kornati Archipelago. There is a lake on the island which is an attractive tourist destination.
