Lopud is an island and a tourist place with a population of 350 at an elevation of 3 m. South - West of Dubrovnik. It was part of the Dubrovnik Republic since the 11th Century. The people of Lo-pud have been sea oriented ever since the ancient times. According to the ancient chronicles, it once had two monasteries and 30 churches little of which is preserved. The ruins of the old gothic Rector's Palace surrounded by the defensive towers are extremely interesting. The churches of Lopud are filled with valuable art works. There are some lovely beaches here.
