Lovinac Travel Guide

Lovinac has 600 inhabitants and is situated on the Gracac to Gospic road. The railway line from Gospic to Split also passes by the town. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The families from Karlobag settled here in the 17th century. Nearby you can see the ruins of the medieval castle Lovinac from the 16th century, which used to belong to ban Ivan Karlovic (ban = civil governor of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia).

There are also the ruins of towns Zvitusa and Petrovaca. After the Turks had been driven away, the town started to develop around the 17th century church of St. Michael. In the war for independence of Croatia, the Serbian Chetniks demolished and burnt down 446 houses in this area.
