Tenement Museum - The Best!

Scott says 6 years ago
I conduct <a href="http://www.familyinnewyork.com&quo York tours</a>. Periodically, I take indivduals and groups to the Tenement Museum. It gets extremely high marks from all. The guides are all expert and passionate about what they do. Their approach of educating guests by telling the story of a family that lived in the building puts a face on the immigrant and tenement experience. The museums also has an excellent selection of books and other education materials for all ages. I think that this should be the next stop, after a visit to the immigration museum at Ellis Island. A real New York gem!

But, in 1867, New York City began passing legislation to improve conditions in tenements. The ensuing wave of housing laws prompted the landlord of 97 Orchard Street to install gas lines, running water and interior flush toilets. By the early 1900s, he had also transformed the building's entryway, d...

Admission is 17 dollars for one adult... yikes!!! Also, the tour was crowded which I was surprised about since I visited on a cold weekday in March.
