| I discoverd an interesting place in Vallejo, CA. It is called the McCune Rare Book and Art Collection, located at the John F Kennedy Library, 505 Santa Clara St, Vallejo, CA 94590. this collection is remarkable because entrance is free yet it has unique items rarely seen except in large museums and libraries. This collection is like a history of printing. There is a leaf from the Gutenberg Bible (1450) and 6 other incunabula (books printed before 1501). There are at least a hundred books from 15th to 19th centuries. There seems to be representations from all the major publishers/printers over the last few centuries. There is a working 1852 Albion Printing Press. I have been informed that they intend to start a printing class shortly. There are also famous botanical prints by Henry Evans. Good collection. No admission fee. Free parking. Near the ferry terminal and also near the Vallejo Maritime and Historical Museum. |
