Montmorency Falls Travel Guide

Montmorency Falls are located a couple of miles east of Quebec City. This natural spectacle boasts an impressive waterfall that measures 272 feet (83 meters) high, surprisingly surpassing the height of the one in Niagara.[1] Its basin at the foot of the falls measures 17 meters or 56 feet deep. The waterfall is situated at the mouth of the Montmorency River and drops over the cliff onto the St. Lawrence River opposite the Île d’Orleans. There is an aerial tram cable car that takes passengers from the base to the top.[2]

In the winter, the spray of the waterfall freezes, creating the likeness of a giant sugar loaf.[3] Also, one of the world’s largest ice sculptures is erected in January to form an 85 bed ice hotel just a few kilometers from the northern end of the falls.[4] In the summer, the waterfall also hosts an international fireworks competition.[5]

There is a cable car that ascends to the top, unveiling a magnificent panoramic view. At the top, you’ll also find the Manoir Montgomery, an old mansion once resided by Prince Edward, who was the father of Queen Victoria. The 1780 house has been converted to a hotel.[6]
