| Although the town of Narberth has grown around the walls of its stone castle the name of the town, derived from the pre-Norman name for the district – Arberth, is older than the castle. Narberth is one of the places where the Prince of Dyfed held court according to the medieval Mabinogion. A Norman castle is mentioned in 1116. In 1652 a weekly market was commenced and proved very successful. By the late C18 Narberth had become an important post-town, situated on the Haverfordwest-Carmarthen turnpike road and the town's several hostelries were founded in this era. NARBERTH TODAY – A UNIQUE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE Modern day Narberth is a welcoming, friendly, vibrant and busy town. It retains its historical heritage – a short stroll around the town will reveal various sites of historical interest including a church that has its origins in the 11th Century and the 13th Century castle, recently restored. It even has a fine Victorian Railway Station. However, Narberth has also transformed itself offering visitors one of the best shopping experiences in Wales. Locals and visitors alike are drawn to the town for the unique and independent character of its shops and attractions. Children’s clothing and toys, leather goods, sweet shops, home and garden ware – just a few of the reasons why Narberth’s reputation as a destination shopping centre has grown over the years. As well as providing a comprehensive shopping experience, when it comes to relaxing you will find cafés, restaurants and pubs where you can take the weight off your feet. Narberth is also the location of various civic and cultural events throughout the year, including Civic Week with the Summer Carnival in July, the Food Festival in September and the Winter Carnival.
