The Notre Dame des Doms cathedral is located next to the Palais des Papes in Avignon, France. This cathedral is a rare example of a pure Romanesque 12th century church whose origin is from Provençe, France. A cupola was added in the 14th century to the masterpiece but collapsed soon afterwards. The church was rebuilt in 1425 and today features stacked Byzantine arches, papal tombs like the mausoleum of Pope John XXII in its gothic carving, and a gargantuan gilded statue of Virgin Mary at the top of its western tower – it is a lantern in fact that projects its glow even miles away. |
