Oprtalj is a settlement of 104 inhabitants at an altitude of 370 meters above sea-level east of Buje on the road from Livade to Gracisce. This is an exquisite medieval town with respect to its size and architecture. It is located on a 300 meters high hillock. It is almost entirely deserted. This is a model settlement with narrow streets and small squares. The parish church of St. Juraj was built in 1517 and has large artistic inventory.
Outside the city walls are the renaissance city lodge dating from the 17th century, a lapidary and a chapel with partly preserved wall paintings from the 16th century. The other the churches are even older. The international centre for protection and improvement of the environment and the cultural relations of the youth cooperates with UNESCO.
