Sopje is a municipality with a population of 660 located near the border crossing to Hungary. It is connected to Slatina by road. It is a rich hunting and fishing ground. It was mentioned as a parish in 1334. The church of St Magdalena was built in 1776. The place Vaska is nearby.
Vaska is of a historical significance. In 1087, after the death of king Zvonimir, the fighting on the Croatian court started. The Hungarian king Ladislav crossed the river Drava in order to conquer the Croatian state. He founded a diocese of Zagreb, and the Croats gathered around king Petar Svacic and started to resist the Hungarians on the mountain Gvozd. The last Croatian national king Petar Svacic was killed there. |
