Sotin is a place with a population of 660 situated 10 km southeast of Vukovar near the Dunav on the road junction from which the roads lead to llok and Tovarnik. This is a rich agricultural area famous for its vineyards and rich archeological localities with findings from the bronze age and the older iron age (the so called Baden and Kostolac cultural circle). The Roman Sotin was named Karnakum.
In the Middle Ages the settlement of Zahtin grew on the ruins of Karnakum. This old place was firs mentioned as a parish in 1332. The Franciscan monastery was built here in 1526 only to be soon destroyed by the Turks. The parish church keeps the painting of the Mother of God which has been brought from the Bosnian town of Olovo. This place suffered greatly in the course of the Serbo-Croatian war and the Croats were driven away.
