The St Just Chartreux quarter is located at the southern end of Boulevard Maréchal du Juin, which is northeast of Palais Longchamp. This quarter is a bit run down but highlights the Hôtel du Département, which in the 20th century was the biggest public building constructed in the French provinces. Designed by William Alsop, the Hôtel du Département is the seat of the local government for Bouches-du Rhône. Architectural tours of the building can be arranged. The Hôtel’s architecture features an incredible glass foyer and huge rectangular blocks of blue steel and glass on the sides.
