Vid is a village with a population of 750 in the region of the lower flow of Neretva, near Metkovic. The church of The Lady of Snow was built in 1961. The entire area is a still deficiently explored archaeological locality. The Roman town of Narona, which was situated here more than 2000 years ago, had more than 80 000 inhibitions, squares, a Forum and an Amphitheatre as well as a number of shops. It was presumably destroyed by the Avars and later flooded by Neretva.
The inhibitions have stone plaques with Latin inscriptions, stemming from the monuments of Nerona, incorporated into their houses. The foundations of a large necropolis and an old Christian basilica with the oldest baptismal font in Croatia dating from the 5th century have been found here recently. This was the seat of the bishops of Norin. Twelve statues of natural size have been found in the remains of the antique Narona in the year 1995, located in the area where the 1st Century Roman temple once stood. This temple was the place where the Roman gods as well as the Roman emperors were worshipped. The monument on the hillock above Vid, shaped like s ship, is dedicated to the famous Croatian ruler, viceroy Domagoj. This work by Stjepan Skoko symbolizes Croatian's sovereignty on the Adriatic sea.
