Re-Opened or Re-Opening

This review is based strictly upon 50+ years of stories about this famous eatery in Eastern Arizona.

The XA Buffet goes back to at least the early 1950's and is probably much older. At one time, it was reputed to serve the best steak available anywhere on the planet. John Wayne, who owned a ranch only a few miles away, apparently loved this place. The walls were painted with vintage cowboy murals..... which are still there. One of the cowboys looks exactly like...you guessed it...The Duke himself. My best recollection/information is that the XA closed up around 1980 and has stood empty ever since. Now, according to the Facebook page "Where in the World is Springerville, Arizona?" the restaurant/bar has reopened. I can't imagine making a road trip on US Highway 60 through eastern Arizona and not stopping at this historic place, if only to drink a beer and enjoy the atmosphere. However, if the new owners have managed to recreate the steaks that were once served here, missing a chance to enjoy one would be a culinary crime. The photo I have posted above is over 50 years old but the place, as of a year ago, looked almost exactly the same. The XA Buffet is located in the historic Lockhart building, a beautiful little place built in the Art Deco style which would have been demolished many years ago had it been located in a larger city. Hopefully, the XA will be filled with old-time cowboys anxious to share the lore of a different and highly romantic era. I live about 500 miles away (in Las Vegas), so it may be a few months before I can make it in to sample menu personally, but I suspect they will have to add a few stars to the rating system here. Ice cold beer, melt-in-your-mouth steak, and the company of old time cowboys who once rode along side The Duke. Can you possible imagine a better way to spend an evening?
