Zirje is the name of an island in the Sibenik Archipelago and a settlement on the same island, with a population of 160. It is famous for the Church of St. Mary from 1891 and the Dominican Monastery from the 12th century. The island became renowned during the recent war.
The Croatian artillery used it as a base for organizing successful counterattacks against the Yugoslav Army. Eventually the aggressor was forced out of the Sibenik waters and a greater destruction of that part of Dalmatia was thus avoided. Zirje was first mentioned in historical documents in 1460. There are tourist facilities on the island.
